The landscape here is ancient and largely unchanged: blanket bog stretching to the horizon, the Twelve Bens rising sharply from the flatlands, and a coastline of inlets, islands and white-sand beaches that would look more at home in the Caribbean were it not for the pewter sky above.
The villages of Clifden, Roundstone and Letterfrack each have their own character — a good pub, a craft workshop, a pier where the fishing boats still go out. The pace of life in Connemara is unhurried in a way that feels earned rather than performed.
